Congress Passes Legislation to Make Public Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on this Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will require the publication of case documents associated with the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a reversal by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. Trump's team gave in after months of trying to delay the joint action involving a scandal that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Expedited Approval in Congress

Senators proceeded by general agreement, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, accelerating the process. Just before, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

Citizens have been patient long enough. Those affected have waited long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader said in a floor speech on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to adopt it by consent. “Reveal the truth. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

This legislation next heads to Donald Trump for his signature. Trump indicated on the previous day that he would approve the bill.

Although Trump has for an extended period dismissed the uproar over the government’s handling of the investigation as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the measure over the weekend, and said he would give his assent if it is presented to him.

Support and Opposition

Democrats, along with victims and their supporters who were seated in a viewing area, applauded after the bill was passed. Lone dissent came from a Louisiana Republican, who expressed concern he feared the measure would disclose personal information of people, those under scrutiny and others implicated in the investigation.
