Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several access tunnels down to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
