Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he remained under confinement pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the protest called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to request asylum through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, prompting him to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.
The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
