Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge certain decisions from the official, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
